What cookies and local storage do

Cookies are small pieces of information a website can ask a browser to store and, where applicable, return with later requests. Local storage keeps information under a site's origin in the browser and can persist between visits. Both can be used for preferences; neither is needed to read these static articles.

The reading pages and tools

The editorial site code does not set analytics, advertising or profiling cookies, and does not use localStorage for article reading, navigation, animation or message drafts. The mobile menu and scroll reveals use temporary page state. They do not create a browsing profile.

If a separate site-level preference notice is presented, its controls govern the optional technologies described in that notice. An essential preference record may be used by that layer to remember a choice. Optional technologies should remain off unless the relevant consent has been given. The editorial message composer does not depend on accepting optional storage.

How the supplied reading tools handle information

Navigation menuCurrent page memoryNo preference is saved by the menu code.
Scroll revealsCurrent page memoryNo reading history is saved by the animation code.
Message previewCurrent page and form fieldsThe tool does not save a draft; browser form restoration may apply.

Download .txtA file you choose to downloadRemains until you remove it.

Caching is separate

Your browser may cache HTML, styles, scripts and images to make repeat requests more efficient. Hosting infrastructure may also process request information for delivery and security. Caching is not the same as an advertising identifier. See the privacy notice for technical processing and correspondence information.

Your controls

You can inspect or remove site cookies and local storage through your browser's site-data settings. Where separate consent controls are available, use them to change optional preferences. Clearing site data may remove remembered choices and cause a notice to appear again. It does not remove downloaded files, email you have sent or clipboard history.

External source links open independently operated websites. Their own cookies and privacy notices apply when you visit them; merely displaying a text link does not load an embedded third-party widget here.
